This is the kit to accompany the Heavy Metal: A Bobbin Lace Survey workshop.

Instructor: Kim Davis

Course Description: Metal threads have been used in textiles since before the common era and played a large role in the birth of bobbin lace. We will explore three different types of bobbin lace that were traditionally made in metal thread: early bobbin lace, regional costume Torchon bobbin lace, leadwork bobbin lace.

Each class will begin with a presentation about the traditional use, materials and where to source materials and patterns for the style. Then we will work the narrow edging/insertion of the day with the appropriate thread.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Prerequisite: Very comfortable reading diagrams, solid Torchon skills including Torchon Ground and a CTC fan, plaits and 4 pair crossings (no picots.), passing a gimp.

Dates: 3 Saturdays - September 12, 19, & 26, 2026
